By man's hand we have created two tools that we can now summon to change
the world, they are machinery and the printing press. Man’s spirit calls
these into operation and see the results! By labour saving machinery man
builds mighty palaces, vast Gothic cathedrals, splendid cities and
enormous piles of manufactured objects. I may stand here, the inhabitant
of a poor and lower house, but I can send to India for my tea, to Brazil
for my coffee, to the islands of the sea for my spices, to South Africa
for my diamonds, to the tropics for rare plants and delicious fruits. And
though I do not move from my humble home, my slave machinery shall bring
me these riches. There are mighty ships to carry these treasures to me,
armies to guard them, engineers to make our roads, the swiftest of metal
vehicles to transport them overland and in the air the length and breadth
of continents. I shall have garments from China, carpets from Persia -
every portion of the world shall yield me of its treasures. And all these
treasures are provided without grudging and become mine in exchange for a
few poor coins of metal, which I shall give, and yet not move from my
place to do it.
But more than even this; Man can not only command electricity, fire, earth
and air to do all this for me, I can sit in my home and learn how ancient
men lived and what they did and what they said, and what their cities
were; nothing shall be hid from me; the history of all living creatures
for me shall be disclosed; and the printing press shall bring this
knowledge to my table at the cost again of a few poor coins.
By machinery we can almost recreate the world, and by the printing press
we can record the tale of every living creature! And all this with the
simple human hand. But what would these hands accomplish unmoved on by the
spirit, the master mind within? It is the soul within which alone makes
these hands accomplish such wonderful things.

Think too; what the soul shall be when these hands are no more!
I stand on
the mountain height that overlooks the mighty rush of the great Niagara
Falls. They tell me that for at least thirty thousand years these mad
waters have torn their way through miles of solid rock to form the chasm
where they now pour down their foaming mass to the river below. But even
"Niagara must die"! It may be thirty thousand years, it may be three
million hence, when the rapids murmuring wail shall be hushed and Niagara
very name is lost. But I shall live forever! I shall still be living - for
I am part of the Alpha and Omega, of the indestructible nature of God. My
Spirit is something higher, more permanent, more powerful than any raging
torrent, more stupendous than any form of matter.
As Spiritualists, we can understand the full magnificence of creation, and
unveil the mystery of God, revealed by angel friends and the witness of
the spirit-circle, the solemn truth, that our soul vastly transcends the
law of matter! We will not decay, we will live forever! Clairvoyance,
clairaudience, trance, vision, psychometry, spiritual healing, how
wonderful appears the soul, and these gleams of power are full of glorious
promise of what we shall be, when the prison gates of matter open wide and
set the spirit free!
The great revelation of Spiritualism is to know what the spirit is, and
what it must do - how best to live, so that you may take your place in
eternity. Spirit teachings, the evidence of the spirit-circle, our angel
friends illuminate our way, that we can no more live in ignorance, nor
wait more in hopelessness, for we know where we are going, what we shall
be, how we shall live and that we shall be alive for evermore!
