Advice for Church Treasurers
Most church treasurers have limited book-keeping and accountancy
experience, however, they are dedicated and give good service to Spiritualism
in this difficult and important area of church administration. The
navigation buttons, on the left, link you to advice and practical support
which should be of help to existing treasurers and to
those who have recently taken up the role.
UK law and the SNU 'rules for churches' put obligations on the whole
committee to deal with finance carefully and accurately. Duties of
church Treasurers are listed in the SNU's Rules for Churches, Rule 15(5)
Record all monies received and paid out and keep appropriate
documentary evidence.
Pay all expenses and invoices authorised by the committee.
Bank monies regularly.
Keep a set of accounts where details of income and expenditure are
entered.
Prepare, or arrange for the preparation, of a year-end Balance Sheet
and Income & Expenditure statement.
Provide periodic statements of accounts to present at each committee
meeting.
Maintain an inventory of church assets.
Ensure the church is adequately insured.
Supervise the church's financial affairs prudently at all
times.
Further financial guidance can be found in SNU
'Rules for Churches,' Rules
(18, 19, 20, & 21)
If you are a member of a SNU church, a copy of
these rules should be made available freely to you, your church may
appreciate a small donation to cover the cost of £1 each.
